History

RŪTA is one of the oldest brands in Lithuania

The history of RŪTA begins in 1913 in Siauliai City. Antanas Gricevicius, a highly talented chocolate connoisseur, is the proud founder of the oldest confectionary factory in Lithuania.

Factory's founder - A. Gricevičius.

Chocolates made by RŪTA are steeped in tradition. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were several confectionery factories in Lithuania, however due to the quality of confectionary made by RŪTA it very quickly took over as market leader using recipes created by Antanas Gricevičius. During this time while exhibiting in the Agriculture and industry trade shows Antanas Gricevičius was awarded 4 gold medals. Internationally RŪTA’s quality was also acknowledged when in 1929 RUTA won the Grand Prix award in Italy and again in 1931 where they won the Gold Medal award in the UK.

In 1940 the factory was nationalised and in 1993 after the Independence of the Republic of Lithuania the RŪTA factory buildings were returned to the family of the founder Antanas Gricevičius. This lead to a period of restoration, the factory was renewed, the equipment upgraded and production was updated. This continues into the present day where packaging changes are implemented, quality management systems are applied and the international standard ISO 9001 was achieved in the year 2000.
